Hanuman Chalisa is a devotional hymn composed by Goswami Tulsidas in praise of Lord Hanuman. Reciting it daily removes fear, illness and hardship.
श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज, निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि।
बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि॥
I narrate the pure glory of Raghubar (Rama), which bestows the four fruits of life.
बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार।
बल बुद्धि बिद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेस बिकार॥
Grant me strength, wisdom and knowledge, and remove my sorrows and impurities.
जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर।
जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥
Victory to the Lord of monkeys, illuminating the three worlds.
राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा।
अञ्जनि-पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥
Son of Anjani, also known as the Son of the Wind.
महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी।
कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥
Remover of evil intellect, companion of good intellect.
कञ्चन बरन बिराज सुबेसा।
कानन कुण्डल कुञ्चित केसा॥
Wearing ear-rings, with curly locks of hair.
हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजै।
काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै॥
The sacred thread of munja grass adorns the shoulder.
शङ्कर सुवन केसरी नन्दन।
तेज प्रताप महा जग बन्दन॥
Your glory and majesty is praised all over the world.
विद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर।
राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥
Always eager to do the work of Rama.
प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया।
राम लखन सीता मन बसिया॥
Rama, Laxman and Sita dwell in your heart.
सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा।
बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥
Taking a terrible form, you burned Lanka.
भीम रूप धरि असुर संहारे।
रामचन्द्र के काज सँवारे॥
And completed all the tasks of Ramachandra.
लाय सञ्जीवन लखन जियाये।
श्रीरघुबीर हरषि उर लाये॥
Shri Raghuvir joyfully embraced you to his heart.
रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई।
तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई॥
"You are as dear to me as my own brother Bharat."
सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावैं।
अस कहि श्रीपति कण्ठ लगावैं॥
Saying so, Shripati (Rama) embraced you.
सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा।
नारद-सारद सहित अहीसा॥
Narada, Saraswati and the king of serpents all sing your praise.
जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते।
कबि कोबिद कहि सके कहाँ ते॥
what poet or wise man can fully describe your glory?
तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीन्हा।
राम मिलाय राज पद दीन्हा॥
and restoring his kingdom to him.
तुम्हरो मन्त्र बिभीषन माना।
लङ्केश्वर भए सब जग जाना॥
the whole world knows this.
जुग सहस्र जोजन पर भानू।
लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू॥
you swallowed it, thinking it to be a sweet fruit.
प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं।
जलधि लाँघि गये अचरज नाहीं॥
you leaped across the ocean — no wonder!
दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते।
सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥
through your grace and blessing.
राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे।
होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥
None may enter without your permission.
सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना।
तुम रक्षक काहू को डर ना॥
When you are the protector, there is no fear from anyone.
आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै।
तीनों लोक हाँक तें काँपै॥
All three worlds tremble at your roar.
भूत पिसाच निकट नहिं आवै।
महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै॥
when the name of Mahavir (Hanuman) is uttered.
नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा।
जपत निरन्तर हनुमत बीरा॥
by constantly chanting the name of the valiant Hanuman.
सङ्कट तें हनुमान छुड़ावै।
मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै॥
who meditates on him in thought, deed and word.
सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा।
तिन के काज सकल तुम साजा॥
You accomplish all of his tasks.
और मनोरथ जो कोई लावै।
सोई अमित जीवन फल पावै॥
attains the boundless fruit of life.
चारों जुग परताप तुम्हारा।
है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥
Your fame illuminates the entire world.
साधु-सन्त के तुम रखवारे।
असुर निकन्दन राम दुलारे।
destroyer of demons, and dearly beloved of Rama.
अष्टसिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता।
अस बर दीन जानकी माता॥
this boon was given to you by Mother Janaki (Sita).
राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा।
सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा॥
May you remain ever the servant of Raghupati.
तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै।
जनम-जनम के दुख बिसरावै॥
and forgets the sorrows of countless lifetimes.
अन्त काल रघुबर पुर जाई।
जहाँ जन्म हरि-भक्त कहाई॥
and is reborn as a devotee of Hari wherever one is born.
और देवता चित्त न धरई।
हनुमत सेइ सर्ब सुख करई॥
serving Hanuman alone gives all happiness.
सङ्कट कटै मिटै सब पीरा।
जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा॥
for whoever remembers the mighty and valiant Hanuman.
जय जय जय हनुमान गोसाईं।
कृपा करहु गुरुदेव की नाईं॥
Please bless me as a Guru does his disciple.
जो सत बार पाठ कर कोई।
छूटहि बन्दि महा सुख होई॥
is freed from bondage and attains great happiness.
जो यह पढ़ै हनुमान चालीसा।
होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा॥
attains perfection — Lord Shiva himself is witness.
तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा।
कीजै नाथ हृदय मँह डेरा॥
O Lord, please make your abode in my heart.
पवनतनय सङ्कट हरन, मङ्गल मूरति रूप।
राम लखन सीता सहित, हृदय बसहु सुर भूप॥
dwell in my heart along with Rama, Laxman and Sita, O King of Gods.
